The following day, the Joker breaks into the home of Commissioner Gordon and shoots his daughter, Barbara Gordon, leaving her paralyzed. The Joker then takes photos of Barbara in her wounded state and shows them to a captured Jim Gordon in an abandoned amusement park. Although Batman eventually rescues Jim, the psychological trauma of the event leaves lasting scars on both Barbara and Jim for decades to come. The story is considered one of the darkest in Batman’s history and has been criticized for the graphic and violent nature of the scene.

For a period of time, he had a son, Damien Wayne, who served as his sidekick Robin. However, this ends in a terrible and violent manner when Damien is killed by the villain Heretic. Despite Bruce Wayne’s attempts to bring Damien back to life, it serves as a haunting reminder of Batman’s failure as both a hero and a father. Damien should never have been put in the position of being Robin, and Batman bears the weight of that failure with him.

Joker, seeing this as an opportunity to disrupt the city’s newfound sense of hope, kidnaps several orphans and sets the Bat-family and Gotham City Police Department on a desperate chase to save the children. During the pursuit, Sarah manages to corner the Joker at gunpoint, but the situation takes a tragic turn when the Joker tosses a baby in the air, forcing Sarah to drop her weapon to catch the child. Joker then shoots and kills Sarah. Despite the gruesome nature of her death, the Joker finds no pleasure in it. When Gordon and the others arrive on the scene, Bullock and Montoya tearfully break the news of Sarah’s death to Gordon. Batman then consoles a broken Gordon.
