Thanos may reign as the ultimate villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—especially after his devastating snap in Avengers: Infinity War. With unmatched strength, brilliant tactics, and a loyal squad like the Black Order at his side, he seems nearly unstoppable. But in the comic book world, things aren’t always in his favor. In fact, the Mad Titan has been taken down more times than you’d expect—and not by teams or armies, but by individuals. Yes, really. In this blog, we’re looking at 7 Marvel Characters Who Defeated Thanos All by Themselves—and some of these showdowns might surprise you.
Thane vs. Thanos – A Son’s Cold Justice
In Infinity #6, when Earth’s mightiest heroes couldn’t stop Thanos and the Black Order, the tide turned in a shocking way. Thanos’ own son, Thane, stepped up.

Thane is half-Inhuman, and with that came god-like abilities. His left hand can alter existence, and his right? It traps victims in a state of living death—an eerie, eternal limbo. With the manipulative Ebony Maw whispering in his ear, Thane used that right hand to imprison Thanos in amber, essentially freezing him in a living nightmare.
A poetic end for a villainous father.
Adam Warlock Turns Thanos to Stone
Back in Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2, Thanos had just defeated the Avengers and seemingly killed Adam Warlock. But in an unexpected twist, Spider-Man and The Thing teamed up to storm Thanos’ ship.

Spidey managed to get the Soul Stone and resurrected Warlock, who came back furious. As Thanos tried to plead, Warlock simply said, “You did, vile serpent,” and turned the Mad Titan into solid granite.
This 1977 moment was so final that Thanos didn’t appear again in comics until 1990—13 years later. Fans genuinely believed he was gone for good.
Zombie Hulk Smashes Thanos’ Head
In the alternate, grotesque world of Marvel Zombies 2 #1, even Thanos wasn’t safe from becoming a meal. The zombified Marvel heroes were desperate for food, and Thanos dared to criticize Hulk for eating more than his share.

Hulk replied, “Prune chin should shut up,” and then crushed Thanos’ skull with his bare hands, causing his head to explode. It was brutal, bloody, and pure zombie chaos.
Nebula Snatches the Gauntlet
During Infinity Gauntlet #5, Thanos made a huge tactical error. He left his physical body unattended while fighting cosmic entities. His “granddaughter” Nebula, who had been tortured and left in a zombie-like state by Thanos himself, seized her chance.

She took the Infinity Gauntlet right off his hand and wished him out of existence. Although Adam Warlock later brought Thanos back to fix the mess, Nebula still technically beat him in that moment—and it was incredibly satisfying to see.
Gladiator Drops Thanos with One Punch
In Thanos #3, we see the Shi’ar Empire’s mighty enforcer, Gladiator, finally get his wish: a chance to take down Thanos solo.

After learning of a psychological flaw in Thanos, Gladiator struck at just the right time. He punched Thanos so hard that he knocked him out cold in a single blow. After that, he calmly told his crew to haul Thanos off to prison.
One punch. That’s it. Done.
Deadpool Obliterates Thanos
You probably didn’t expect Deadpool on this list, but in Deadpool vs. Thanos #4, the Merc with a Mouth got the job done.

Both Deadpool and Thanos were trying to save their mutual crush, Lady Death, and ended up teaming up to do it. But when Deadpool realized Thanos and Death were plotting to destroy Eternity itself, he went rogue.
Wielding the immense power of the Uni-Power, Deadpool completely vaporized Thanos. It was hilarious, unexpected, and—surprisingly—epic.
Drax Punches Through Thanos
In Annihilation #4, Thanos committed the ultimate sin—he kidnapped Moon Dragon, the daughter of Drax the Destroyer. And if there’s one thing Drax doesn’t take lightly, it’s threats to his family.

Driven by rage and purpose, Drax found Thanos and did what he was literally created to do: punched a hole straight through Thanos’ chest, pulling out his heart.
When his daughter asked what he had done, Drax answered coldly, “What I was created to do.”
