10 Most Powerful Versions of Goblin In Spider-Man Comics
Red Goblin/Norman Osborn
Norman Osborn’s quest for power and immortality led him to cheat death using the regenerative properties of the Goblin serum. Spider-Man tried to eliminate the serum from Osborn’s system by injecting him with a nanotech cure. However, Osborn fought back by bonding with the Carnage symbiote, nullifying the cure, and re-empowering himself with the Goblin serum.
The result was the creation of the Red Goblin, one of Spider-Man’s deadliest foes. This villain possessed a combination of the serum and symbiote that granted him incredible powers like superhuman strength, agility, shape-shifting, and weapon generation. The Red Goblin has proven to be a formidable adversary for Spider-Man, engaging in several epic battles.
Green Goblin/Norman Osborn
Norman Osborn is the original and most famous version of the Goblin in Spider-Man comics. He is a wealthy industrialist who becomes the Green Goblin after using an experimental serum that enhances his strength and intelligence, but also drives him insane.
As the Green Goblin, Norman Osborn is one of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies and has caused Peter Parker numerous tragedies over the years. From killing Gwen Stacy, Peter’s girlfriend, to manipulating his son Harry into becoming the second Green Goblin, Norman Osborn has proven to be a formidable foe who challenges Spider-Man both physically and mentally.
New Goblin/Harry Osborn
Harry Osborn is the son of Norman Osborn and the best friend of Peter Parker (Spider-Man). Like his father, Harry also became the Green Goblin by using a similar serum that enhanced his physical and mental abilities but also drove him insane. However, after his father’s death, Harry took on a new identity as the New Goblin, abandoning the Green Goblin persona and adopting a different suit and weaponry.
Unlike his father, Harry relied on advanced technology and gadgets instead of superhuman abilities to fight Spider-Man. Despite his different approach, Harry’s conflicts with Spider-Man were just as intense and personal, as he struggled to balance his loyalty to his father’s legacy with his friendship with Peter.
Demogoblin/Jason Macendale
Macendale’s desire to enhance his abilities as the Hobgoblin resulted in a pact with a demon during the “Inferno” event in New York City. This pact fused his soul with a demon, granting him immense power but at the cost of his humanity. Macendale later separated from the demon, which assumed a new form as the Demogoblin, a fiery monster with a mission to eradicate sinners, which in his eyes, was everyone except children. The Demogoblin possessed several demonic abilities, such as conjuring fiery pumpkin bombs, deploying Darkforce traps, and commanding a glider made of living Hellfire that he could control mentally.
Hobgoblin/Roderick Kingsley
The original Hobgoblin was a billionaire fashion designer named Roderick Kingsley, who had an obsession with committing crimes without being detected. In pursuit of his goals, he manipulated several men, including his own brother Daniel, “Lefty” Donovan, and Ned Leeds, into posing as the Hobgoblin.
However, Kingsley’s true identity was eventually revealed when he returned from time abroad, where he had operated under other costumed identities, to reclaim his place as the original Hobgoblin. He had perfected the Goblin formula created by Osborn, and his strength was comparable to that of both Osborn and Spider-Man. Despite his formidable abilities, Kingsley was more strategic and less impulsive than some of the other Goblins.
Two-Faced Goblin/Harvey Osborn
The Two-Faced Goblin possesses the same abilities as the original Green Goblin, Norman Osborn, who was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #14. He heavily relies on his advanced technology, but unlike Osborn, he combines his greed and inventiveness with Harvey Dent’s instability from DC Comics, resulting in a new and unique villain.
This character was created in the 1990s during the Amalgam Comics crossover between Marvel and DC. The Two-Faced Goblin seeks revenge against Dark Claw, a hybrid of Batman and Wolverine, for an injury inflicted upon him.
Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy
The death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man #122 is perhaps one of the most shocking deaths in Marvel Comics. In Earth-3109, however, she becomes the Goblin herself. This version of Gwen Stacy ingests the Goblin formula, which grants her superhuman strength and stamina.
Additionally, she wears slightly more advanced armor than the original variant from Earth-606. After her father and Norman Osborn die in a tragic event, she turns to evil. Prior to this, she had fought alongside Spider-Man as a heroic figure in her universe.
Iron Goblin/Anthony Stark
Iron Man had a similar background to his Earth-616 counterpart in the alternate universe of the Spider-Verse. However, in the 2015 Spider-Island miniseries, he was infected with the Spider-Virus, which turned him into a human-spider hybrid. He later consumed the Goblin formula, gaining superhuman abilities and becoming the Iron Goblin.
He created a powerful Goblin armor and glider and became a servant to the Spider-Queen, terrorizing the world. In a different timeline, he was infected with the Spider-Virus, sprayed with the Goblin Formula, and became the Iron Goblin, seeking revenge against Norman Osborn. In the end, he sacrificed himself to allow the Resistance to escape from the Spider-Army.
Ultimate Green Goblin/Norman Osborn
In Earth-1610, The Ultimate Green Goblin gained powers by ingesting the OZ formula, similar to the Goblin formula but more potent. Unlike other Goblins, he transformed into a muscular and monstrous creature with sharp claws, resembling the Hulk. The OZ formula made Norman Osborn immortal and he kept returning to life in more menacing forms.
Eventually, he succeeded in killing the Ultimate Spider-Man. Norman Osborn, the Oscorp CEO, neglected his family, including wife Martha and son Harry. When an experiment to create a Super-Soldier drug for S.H.I.E.L.D. went wrong, he turned into a demon-like monster and killed Martha. Spider-Man defeated the Goblin after he attacked Harry’s school, and he fell into the river, seemingly dead.
1602 Green Goblin
In Earth-311’s 1602 variant, the Green Goblin may not possess the advanced technology of his counterparts, but he is still a formidable foe. This version of Norman Osborn consumed a unique formula that transformed him into an actual goblin, complete with wings that granted him the ability to fly. In terms of appearance, he bears some resemblance to Man-Bat, one of Batman’s prominent comic book villains.
Osborn is a major antagonist in the 1602 miniseries, driven by his insatiable curiosity and greed. This eventually leads to his demise in a battle against Peter Parquagh, the 1602 version of Spider-Man.
