In this article, we will take a closer look at the 10 best romantic story arcs in dc comics, exploring the complex relationships, heart-wrenching moments, and passionate connections that have captured readers’ hearts for decades.
10 Best Romantic Story Arcs in DC Comics
Superman and Lois Lane
The first iconic romantic storyline in DC is undoubtedly between Superman and Lois Lane, who are considered the most iconic comic book couple of all time. What sets their relationship apart in this era is that it features the Superman of the Pre-Flashpoint era, who is married to Lois and has a son named Jon. The discovery that the timeline is being manipulated by the enigmatic Mr. Oz comes after a battle with Mr. Mxyzptlk exposes the alternate timeline manipulations, resulting in the merging of the Pre and Post Flashpoint realities. As a result, their romance becomes an integral part of the Rebirth era stories as a whole.
Batman and Catwoman
The most adored and widely discussed romance, which was also the most tumultuous, is undoubtedly between Batman and Catwoman. Following several events in the Rebirth era that compelled Bruce to reevaluate his life, he was able to clear Catwoman’s name of a grave offense and confess his feelings for her. After proposing to her, the two spent months engaged, sharing previously undisclosed revelations with each other and working together to thwart their enemies. However, Catwoman eventually decided to end the relationship, fearing that their love would cause Batman harm and that the world would always require him to be whole.
Aquaman and Mera
Although superhero weddings are now commonplace, there was a time when they were considered unheard-of. This changed in 1964 when the Aquaman comic book series made history by featuring the first-ever superhero wedding in its issue #18. At the time, Aquaman had recently been crowned the king of Atlantis, and it was expected of him to marry a woman from his kingdom. However, Aquaman had developed feelings for Mera, who was from another dimension and thus ineligible for marriage. Following the villain Oceanus’ attempt to conquer Atlantis, Mera’s bravery and assistance earned her the status of an honorary Atlantean, making it acceptable for the two to tie the knot.
Green Arrow and Black Canary
After Oliver Queen’s death, the world carried on without him. His mantle as Green Arrow was taken up by his son, Connor Hawke, and Black Canary joined the JSA and began a romantic relationship with Dr. Mid-Nite. However, in the 2001 series, Oliver began to rebuild his life. He became the mayor of Star City, and over time, he and Black Canary rekindled their romance. When Black Canary was almost killed by Deathstroke, Green Arrow was forced to confront his feelings for her and realized how much she meant to him. The series concludes with Oliver resigning from his position as mayor and proposing to Dinah.
Raven and Kid Flash
One of the most distinctive relationships to develop in the Rebirth era is between Kid Flash and Raven of the Teen Titans. While many long-time fans may be familiar with the strong connection between Raven and Beast Boy, the early days of the Rebirth era depicted a burgeoning bond between Wally West and Raven. Throughout the Rebirth era, the two characters have demonstrated a mutual attraction, with Raven taking a bold step by expressing her love for Wally through a kiss, which inspired him to save numerous lives. Whether their relationship will evolve further is a matter of speculation.
Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris
One relationship that has been hinted at is that between Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris. Hal is widely regarded as the most prominent and powerful Green Lantern, while Carol is known as Star Sapphire. During Hal’s solo comic book run in the Rebirth era, he frequently pondered his relationship with Carol. Throughout the series, as he confronted numerous universe-ending threats and embarked on missions involving the afterlife and alternate realities, Hal’s deepest desire was revealed to be a life and family with Carol. Eventually, they reunite and share a long-awaited kiss.
Barry Allen and Iris West
We can say one of the most significant relationships in the Rebirth era is that between Iris West and Barry Allen, better known as The Flash. Barry is among the first characters to become aware of the changes brought about by the Rebirth era after he rescues and recalls the original Wally West from the time stream and speed force. As memories of his love for Iris come flooding back to him, Barry struggles to reignite his relationship with the Iris of the Rebirth era. Although a surprising revelation of his identity as The Flash briefly separates them, the two eventually reunite.
Nightwing and Defacer
An intriguing young romance that emerged in the Rebirth era features Nightwing and a former adversary who became an ally, the Defacer. Dick Grayson encountered Shawn Tsang during his early years as Robin. Shawn was a pupil of the villain Pigeon, and she and her cohorts engaged in “art terrorism” that was thwarted by Batman and Robin in Gotham City.
Years later, Shawn moved to Bludhaven and left her life of crime behind. Although there was some initial mistrust due to their shared history, old feelings rekindled and the two fell in love. Regrettably, their relationship was short-lived, but it was passionate while it lasted.
Nightwing and Batgirl
Although Nightwing has already been featured on this list, it would be remiss not to include his one true love in the DC Universe, Barbara Gordon, in a comprehensive Rebirth era romance list. Nightwing and Batgirl have always had an unrequited love that never quite gets off the ground, given Nightwing’s work in Bludhaven and Batgirl’s involvement with the Birds of Prey and the city of Burnside. While the two almost rekindled their romance, Batgirl was too late as Nightwing was already in a relationship. Nevertheless, their love remains central to Nightwing’s character.
Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn was initially portrayed as a love-struck partner to the Joker, who only manipulated her for his own purposes. Over time, Harley developed a friendship with fellow supervillain Poison Ivy, but it took some time for their relationship to evolve into a romantic one.
Ivy played a significant role in helping Harley discover her identity outside of the Joker’s influence. In the Gotham City Sirens series, Ivy slowly realized her feelings for Harley, and their relationship gradually developed beyond mere friendship. However, it was not until the 2017 Harley Quinn series that the two finally became an official couple.
