Ottessa Moshfegh’s writing delves into life’s uncomfortable corners, offering a raw, unapologetic view. If one wants a darker, more daring narrative filled with sardonic humor, one must read My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh.

The protagonist longs to hibernate for a year, seeking escape from her pain, but her journey is far from smooth. The story explores addiction, dysfunctional relationships, and existential struggles. Ultimately, it questions whether we can ever truly escape pain and if being wide awake to life’s challenges is our path to freedom.

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

The book “Slaughterhouse-Five” is a unique book that’s hard to categorize. It explores the themes of war, time, and the absurdity of existence, all summed up with the phrase “So it goes.” It’s a thought-provoking, occasionally funny, and sometimes harrowing read.

The story follows Billy Pilgrim, an optometrist who, aside from being an ordinary guy, has an unusual ability to time travel involuntarily. He witnesses the devastating bombing of Dresden during World War Two, an event that left a deep impact on him. Despite his time-traveling adventures, life isn’t all fun, as he relives moments repeatedly.

Bunny by Mona Awad

10 Best Dark Comedy Books Of All Time –Bunny by Mona Awad

The book Bunny is quite a wild ride. It’s set in an exclusive northeastern university, and the main character, Samantha (nicknamed Smackie), is far from fitting in with the elite clique called the Bunnies. She’s a scholarship student with a unique and somewhat eccentric personality. Her best friend, Ava, represents her past, while the Bunnies symbolize a privileged life.

There’s a constant inner struggle within Samantha as she’s both attracted to and repulsed by the Bunnies’ world. The story starts off normal but quickly veers into a surreal mix of violence, drugs, and strange fantasies.

Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason

Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason

Meg Mason’s “Sorrow and Bliss” offers a realistic and intricate portrayal of mental illness through the eyes of its main character, Martha. . The novel beautifully depicts how mental illness affects not only the person experiencing it but also their loved ones.

She’s aware of her struggles but can’t quite pinpoint the cause. Mason’s decision to avoid labeling Martha’s condition emphasizes the complexity of mental health. The book engages readers emotionally, making them root for Martha’s happiness while highlighting the challenges of living with mental illness.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

Approaching a debut novel by a celebrity writer like Richard Osman can be a bit uncertain, but “The Thursday Murder Club” turns out to be a delightful surprise. Osman’s storytelling combines wit, humor, and a clever plot, making it a refreshing break from darker crime fiction.

Set in Kent, the story follows a group of sharp and spry senior individuals who take on the challenge of solving cold case murders. Led by the formidable Elizabeth, they secretly acquire police files and employ their considerable brainpower. As the story unfolds it leads to unexpected and humorous investigations.

Yellowface by Rebecca F Kuang

At its core, “Yellowface” is a wild blend of genres that delves into the bizarre “friendship” between Athena and June, two authors in the publishing world with vastly different levels of success.

“Yellowface” is a fast-paced, thought-provoking read with a unique insight into the world of authors and publishing. Athena hits the big time, while June struggles to make her mark. After an absurd pancake eating contest gone wrong, Athena tragically dies, and June seizes the opportunity to steal Athena’s manuscript and claim it as her own.

The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart

10 Best Dark Comedy Books Of All Time –The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart

Author Luke Rhinehart, it’s rumored, used dice to decide the story’s direction, showing his creative prowess. Unlike some Books where events seem disjointed, here in the book The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart, every happening feels purposeful and connected.

“The Dice Man” begins with a shocking and daring act by the protagonist, who lets the roll of a dice decide his actions, even leading to the unthinkable. This bold start sets the tone for the whole book, and remarkably, it lives up to the initial excitement. “The Dice Man” is a captivating and unique read that’s worth picking up.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

The book “Catch-22” seamlessly shifts between humor and tragedy, resembling the comedy/tragedy masks. Just as one long for an intermission, the story ingeniously ties together seemingly unrelated events.

Heller’s narrative brilliance becomes evident in Act III, where earlier setups deliver poignant messages. Like Kurt Vonnegut, he tackles war horrors through absurdity. Yet, his true target is bureaucracy, not just war. This cleverly crafted novel is an intricate blend of contradictions, making it a captivating and thought-provoking read.

Shriver by Chris Belden

A delightful novel “Shiver” is set at a writers’ conference, where a man pretends to be a mysterious writer missing for two decades. The story unfolds with a hilarious cast of characters, each with their own unique quirks and amusing names.

The plot is a zany mix of elements, including a horse, cheerleaders, imposters, bathtubs, and endearing personalities. Chris Belden deserves praise for crafting this genuinely funny and entertaining story that will leave you laughing and thoroughly entertained.

The novel, Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone narrated by Ernest, cleverly unfolds the mystery while adhering to crime fiction’s rules, revealing information strategically. Dark humor and irony add depth to the story, making it an engaging and witty read that keeps readers enthralled.

Ernest Cunningham, a self-published author of crime guides, reluctantly attends a family reunion at a snowy ski resort, facing a family with simmering conflicts. When an unidentified body is found, Ernest takes on the role of detective, following the rules of Golden Age crime fiction.

Ready for a Marvel-ous journey through the quirky corners of the Marvel Universe? Hold on your laughter as we delve into the not-so-super intellects that make even Deadpool look like a Rhodes Scholar. Yes, we’re talking about the 10 Dumbest Characters in Marvel Universe! Whether it’s Taserface, whose name screams “I tried too hard,” or Eye-Scream, who’s never been the “flavor of the month,” these characters show that you don’t need a high IQ to save—or sometimes jeopardize—the day. So buckle up as we count down the characters who prove that sometimes, brawn definitely outweighs the brain!

First on our list is “Forbush Man”, the epitome of marvel’s tongue-in-cheek humor. Originally a low-level office worker named Irving Forbush at the Marvel bullpen, he eventually donned a pot on his head to become the absurd and spectacularly inept Forbush Man. His superpowers? None to speak of, really, unless you count his unparalleled ability to induce eye-rolls and facepalms.

With a knack for turning any situation into an awkward comedy sketch, Forbush Man mostly exists to mock the superhero genre itself. Despite his lack of heroic qualities, or perhaps because of them, he manages to “defeat” villains in the most ludicrous ways, usually by dumb luck or their underestimation of his absolute foolishness. With Forbush Man, the joke’s always on him—but he’s too clueless to realize it.

Eye-Scream

10 Dumbest Character in Marvel Universe – Eye-Scream

Meet Eye-Scream, the marvel character who turned absurdity into an art form. Born with the “awe-inspiring” ability to turn into any flavor of ice cream you can imagine, this guy is basically a walking Baskin-Robbins. In a universe filled with mutants capable of altering reality or controlling elements, Eye-Scream’s powers are laughably non-threatening.

His master plan? To destroy the X-Men for making him feel inferior with their flashy powers. Yes, you heard that right—Eye-Scream aimed to take down some of the most formidable mutants with nothing but his ice cream abilities. His ridiculousness peaks when he chooses to transform into banana-flavored ice cream, a choice so daft it almost makes you root for the guy.

Drax The Destroyer

Drax The Destroyer

Next on our list is Drax the Destroyer, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s lovably literal muscleman. Sworn to avenge his family, Drax is all brawn and practically zero brain. He struggles to grasp the subtleties of the English language, making metaphors and sarcasm utterly lost on him—a comedic gem, but hardly a sign of intellect. What really sets him apart in the dunce department is his brazen impulsivity.

The guy doesn’t think; he just acts. Take, for example, his not-so-brilliant idea of summoning Ronan the Accuser to Knowhere when absolutely no one was ready for a showdown. This fiasco nearly got Gamora captured and left Drax clinging to life. And who could forget his epically ridiculous line about slaying a creature from the inside because its hide was “too thick to be pierced from the outside”?

Taserface

10 Dumbest Character in Marvel Universe – Taserface

Taserface, the blundering Ravager, staged a mutiny against Yondu but failed spectacularly at the villain game. Not only did he oust everyone loyal to Yondu but bizarrely left his former captain and Groot, a fellow Guardian of the Galaxy, alive. This oversight led to Yondu acquiring his fin and arrow back, facilitating an epic escape that resulted in the demise of Taserface’s crew and the ship. As if this wasn’t enough, Taserface’s choice of name only evoked laughter rather than fear. His dumbest line? “It’s too adorable to kill!”

Red Guardian

Red Guardian

Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian, the Soviet Union’s answer to Captain America—if that answer was scribbled on a bar napkin after too many vodka shots. A blend of paternal ignorance and misplaced bravado, Red Guardian is more like your goofy uncle who believes he’s still got it than a superhero. He’s still pining for the “good ol’ days,” proving that years in a top-secret prison can’t fix dumb.

His eternal optimism is epitomized in his willingness to believe, for the umpteenth time, that prison guards might actually let him have the care package his fans sent him. Instead, he watches them devour his goodies while his hopes deflate faster than a punctured bouncy castle. And then there’s his fashion sense—or lack thereof—proudly summed up in his dumbest line ever, “Still fits.”

Trevor Slattery / “Mandarin”

Slattery, the man who hilariously portrayed “The Mandarin,” a fearsome nemesis of Tony Stark. Except, he’s not really fearsome—or intelligent, for that matter. He’s an actor with a resume of poor life choices, the dumbest being taking on a role that makes him a global villain. The guy lacks not just a moral compass but also a functioning brain compass, demonstrating terrible judgment and impulsive behavior throughout his time in the limelight.

When his true identity was finally exposed, he went from feared terrorist to bumbling idiot in the blink of an eye. And let’s not forget his unforgettable admission about the guns being fake because, in his own words, “those wankers wouldn’t trust me with the real ones.” Trevor, you might have fooled the world for a moment, but you can’t fool us into thinking you’ve got a single brain cell to spare.

Roger Harrington

Mr. Harrington, the science teacher who’d probably mistake his own periodic table for a cafeteria menu. Despite boasting a degree from Culver University, this Midtown School educator seems to have majored in the art of cluelessness. While he’s smart enough to teach young minds, he couldn’t detect danger if it came with a warning label and a siren. Take, for example, his European misadventure where he lost his camera to a Venetian canal and, miraculously, not a single student.

His itinerary seemed to be drafted by Murphy’s Law—whatever could go wrong, did go wrong. Yet, he naively accepted every “surprise upgrade” as if it was a gift from the universe rather than an obvious trap. The cherry on his ineptitude sundae? His assurance that “As you know, we made it out alive. And that’s the important thing. I couldn’t bear to lose a student on a school trip. Not again.” Ah, Mr. Harrington, you’re the human embodiment of ‘See No Evil, Hear No Evil.’

Woo, the FBI agent with a heart of gold but the detective skills of a golden retriever. Sure, he’s affable, but let’s just say you wouldn’t want him as your poker partner. Woo’s idea of a strategic maneuver was trying to outwit the genius trio of Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne, and Hank Pym. If that weren’t enough, his conversation with Cassie, Lang’s daughter, was about as clear as mud. It’s hard to determine his most cringe-worthy moment, but letting Lang & Co. dupe him while under his watch might take the cake.

If the FBI had a wall of shame, Woo’s picture would be front and center with his dumbest line written below: “Seriously? Yes! Oh. Sorry, Scott. They were your friends. That’s insensitive. I just really needed a win, you know?”

Jumping ship to join Hela faster than you can say “Asgardian traitor,” all to save his own skin. Sure, he eventually redeemed himself, but not without leaving us gems like, “Well, well. Look who decided to pop in.
Last on our list is “Mantis”, the empathic extraterrestrial and the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ultimate “awkward friend,” is a prime example of how not knowing stuff can get you into, well, complicated situations. Raised by Ego in a far-off corner of the cosmos, her grasp of social norms is sketchier than Star-Lord’s dance moves. Mantis might be clueless but she’s innocent, like a deer caught in cosmic headlights.

Her real doozy? Spilling the emotional beans about Thanos during a pivotal moment in Avengers: Infinity War. If she’d just zipped it, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might have defused the Mad Titan before the universe-shattering Snap. Her most forehead-slapping line? “Listen! Ego’s gotten exactly what he wanted. I should have told you earlier. I’m stupid. You are in danger.”

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus is stunning, beautiful and inspiring. This incredible read revolves around a quirky, splendid, take no bull female character who stands her ground in a male-dominated profession. I think the most astounding aspect about Lessons in Chemistry is the amount I laughed uncontrollably. I think this new writer will go far in her writing career. This is a very well written, fast paced book set in the 1960’s with bunches of exciting twists and feel good moments.

In the early 1960s, the story happens in the southern California town of Commons. The common view on female is best described by the well-known sitcoms of the day – think Harriet Nelson, Donna Reed, and the Beaver’s mother, June Cleaver.

Elizabeth Zott is our primary character and she is born ahead of her time. Her dream about becoming a research scientist unexpectedly closed when her mentor in her program sexually assaulted her and denied her entrance into the PhD program. Along with that, her workplace at the Hastings Research Institute isn’t much better; she is downgraded from her position as a chemist to a lab tech by narrow minded boss and ultimately terminated.

As her life unfurls, she loses her first love, turns into the mother of an “ill-conceived” child, and in the middle of all this, she hosts an afternoon TV program highlighting cooking based on chemistry. The show not just trains females to cook from a totally different point of view, but in addition moves the crowd to think about bold, new opportunities for their lives.

The characteristics I appreciate most about this female character – what makes her a genuine champion – are her trustworthiness, her integrity and her diligence. While her ability to stand up for her reality in the face of overwhelming social and cultural prejudice toward ladies overall and in science explicitly, her firm stance guarantees she won’t ever “fit in” – a somewhat lonely and disappointing presence.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus is an amazing debut book with quirky characters, socially relevant topics, emotional swings, winks of humour and some funny moments. I loved this story and I highly recommend this book.
