Last week, on 25 January 2021 The Hollywood Reporter, reported that Harry Potter series is in early development at HBO Max. When the magazine reached out to executives from Warner Bros. and HBO, they denied the rumours. However, it is being said that it is at an extremely early stage and meetings are happening as no writers and cast are attached to the project. This is a surprise as J. K Rowling, the creator and author of the Harry Potter has been reluctant to return to Hogwarts one too many times.

However, Harry Potter books and films being adapted into a TV series seems inevitable as there are numerous other books that have been adapted into films being revived for the small screen. Example: Amazon Prime Video is developing a series based on Lord Of The Rings by J. R. R Tolkein and HBO Max is also prepping to create a series inspired by ‘The Shining’ by Stephen King. Since the announcement there have been speculations if the series would be a sequel, a prequel, a spin-off or be based on the books just like the films. Nothing about the project is clear along with the fact if it is officially happening. If the series ever does get made it will be good news for Harry Potter fans, till that happens reminisce on the old Harry Potter books and movies…

Harry Potter Book Journey Till Now (1997 – 2007)

Harry Potter is incredibly popular with both children and adults. All the books were bestsellers and are available in more than 200 countries and some 60 languages. Harry Potter, a fictional character of a boy wizard was first introduced to the world by author J. K Rowling in the book ‘Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone’ published in 1997. The same book was also published as ‘Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone’.

Harry Potter is an orphan who lives with his mean guardians Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and their son Dudley aka The Dursley Family. On his 11th birthday Harry finds out that his parents were a witch and wizard and also that he is a wizard too. He is invited to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Also learns that his parents were murdered by an evil wizard named Voldemort and not in a car crash as his uncle and aunt told him. He is the only person to survive an attack by Voldemort. This incidence left him with a lightning bolt shaped scar on his forehead. Because of this he is a celebrity figure in the wizarding community.

When Harry goes to Hogwarts he befriends his classmates Ron Weasley and Hermoine Granger. He becomes fast friends with Hagrid, a gamekeeper at Hogwarts, and finds a rival in Draco Malfoy. He is taken under the wing of the school’s headmaster Albus Dumbledore. All these relationships persevere throughout the series as the young wizards and witches grow older and soon they are called upon to take sides in a growing wizard war. This coming-of-age story of a young wizard has seven novels published from 1997 to 2007. The books sold over 500 million copies.

Harry Potter Films Journey Till Now (2001-2011)

The books were adapted into the blockbuster series of eight films released over 10 years from 2001 to 2011. The final book, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was adapted into two films. In the film Harry Potter was portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe. Harry’s friends Ron and Hermoine were played by Rupert Grint and Emma Watson respectively. Actor Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore for the first two films but after his death he was replaced by Michael Gambon. Draco Malfoy was played by Tom Felton and Voldemort was played by Ralph Fiennes. The films have earned more than $7 million (approximately five thousand crore).

The Harry Potter universe has already been expanded in The Fantastic Beasts spin-off prequel films. There are five films planned in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the third film of five is planned to be released in2022. The first film ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where And Where To Find Them’ is about cute creatures owned by Newt Scamander and the second film ‘ The Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ is half World War II allegory and half about the adventures of Newt Scamander. However, these films did work at the box office.

There is even a play which is co-written by J. K Rowling, ‘Harry Potter and The Cursed Child’ (2016). It is a script and not actually a novel but it was advertised as the eight story of the series (books). The play follows Harry who is now married to Ginny Weasley, and they are the parents of James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna. Although working for the Ministry of Magic, Harry continues to struggle with his past, while Albus must contend with his father’s legacy.

Difference Between the Books and Films

As Potterheads, there are people who have read all seven books multiple times and binged all eight films numerous times. Whether we look at books or films which are both perfect on their own which are based on the imagination of J. K. Rowling. However, fans can’t help but compare the two. There are many small and some crucial differences between the books and films. Such as Aunt Petunia and Dudley are blond in the books but in the films they are brunette. In the novel, Harry first meets Draco Malfoy and rejects his friendship in Diagon Alley but in the film this happens at Hogwarts before the Sorting Hat Ceremony.

The sorting hat sings before every ceremony in book but not in the film. In film many of Ron’s braver moments from book are given to Hermoine. There are also some characters missing from films that were in the books like Peeves who is a mischievous, noisy poltergeist, Professor Binns who is a ghost teaching History of Magic at Hogwarts and Charlie Weasley who is Ron’s second oldest brother working with the dragons in Romania among others. There are such as crucial details that have not been mentioned in the films. Example:  The films don’t mention or clarify that Mr. Filch is a squib and has no magic. In Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince the film does not give much information about the actual Half Blood Prince which is given in the book.

Reasons The Harry Potter Series Can Become A Success

Harry Potter is a hugely successful franchise. So the obvious reason for the probable success of the Harry Potter series would be that it is quite simply popular. Audiences in general always love to return to their beloved characters, and Harry Potter will maximize this because most of the people will watch the series no matter what the plot is simply because it is Harry Potter! Harry Potter already has a huge fan base and its world has been expanded through games, plays and more which means that if the studio decides to go forward with the series there are many stories and plots to choose from.

As the series might be coming to a small screen on a streaming service there is a sure guarantee that people will watch it. In the film some of the moments from the books were left out probably because the film-makers were not able to fit everything in a duration of 2 hours. However in a series format the creators can be faithful to the book and be able to include those moments because as the serials are in episodes they do not have a limitation.

Reasons The Harry Potter Series Might Not Succeed

Harry Potter has a huge fan base, this can be a boon or a curse. It can be a curse because the fans might have high expectations. The film franchise were so good the bar is set quiet high. When the revival of any original fan favourite franchise is made there is a chance of it not living up to the expectations in that case fans are ruthless with their criticism. Example: Star Wars! The original Star Wars films are far better than the latter ones. The beloved original cast of the film Harry Potter would not reunite on screen, sadly as many of them have said before.

However, the biggest reason the Harry Potter series might not work is because of J. K Rowling. Last year in 2020, the author made a transphobic comments and tweets, affirming her transphobic position. Many fans turned on her as they were angry and furious to learn how narrow-minded she is. J. K. Rowling was once seen as an avant-garde of progressive idealism, is now seen as a world-famous transphobe. Many fans challenged her and asked her to change her views, but instead she refused to change her views. Because of her intolerance the author has hurt many fans, especially trans fans. This has led to many people to cancel or boycott J. K. Rowling. While some find joy in the Harry Potter books, only a few want to continue supporting her financially.
