Hello and welcome to the Book Review podcast. I’m your host and today we’re diving into the world of horror with Stephen Graham Jones’ latest book, “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. This book is a sequel to “My Heart Is a Chainsaw” and promises to take us on a journey full of blood, gore, and terror. So, let’s get started!

“Don’t Fear the Reaper” picks up five years after the events of the first book. Jade, the notorious killer, is back, but she’s now going by a new name, Jennifer. Despite her new identity, her legacy still lives on, and the town is still haunted by her actions. We see a mix of old and new characters, including Letha, the chosen final girl from the first book, who has learned that horror movies can save your life. We also have Mr. Armitage, the new history teacher, who is obsessed with horror movies, maybe even more than Jade.

This book doesn’t waste any time and jumps right into the action. The violence and gore are present throughout the entire book, and it’s not for the faint of heart. In fact, it took me almost two weeks to read because of its intensity. Jones’ unique prose keeps the story moving relentlessly.

The book’s characters are well-developed, and you can feel their fear and desperation as they try to survive the killer’s attacks. The town is on edge, and everyone sees the world differently. The first book focused on no one believing the final girl, but in this sequel, we see her returning with experience and authority, making people believe her without question.

The book’s climax is explosive, and the resolution is satisfying. However, it also leaves room for the third book, as we see who survives the chaos. This book is not just about the horror genre; it also explores themes of trauma, identity, and the power of stories.

Overall, “Don’t Fear the Reaper” is a great sequel that raises the stakes, brings in new and old characters, and ties up some loose ends from the first book. The book is full of slasher movie references, some of which may fly over your head if you’re not familiar with the genre. However, it won’t hinder your enjoyment of the story.
