NALTOR — A PLANET ON THE EDGE OF OBLIVION

The comic opens on Naltor, a world at the far end of the universe once famous for something remarkable: no one — on any planet in the sector — would make a significant decision without first consulting the Seers of Naltor, psychic visionaries whose prophecies were considered infallible. That age is over. Naltor is crumbling, forgotten, left to decay after years of societal collapse and neglect.

We’re dropped immediately into the chaos. A squad of Green Lanterns led by the growling, rumbling-voiced Volk — accompanied by his colleagues Vexar’u, Taurangae, Xi’Add, and Zghithii — arrives on the surface. Their mission: find two missing Lanterns, Quintela and Narf, last reported on Naltor. But the moment they try to interact with the locals, something is very wrong. The citizens aren’t scared or hostile. They’re entranced, walking as one and chanting in unison: “We all dream of the Witch Queen.”

Even the Seers — the planet’s trained clairvoyants — are gone. Instead, something alien has taken root in the population’s dreaming minds. And standing in the middle of this nightmare is Galaxy (real name: Taylor Barzelay), the last refugee of the destroyed planet Cyandii. She’s been here already, keeping an eye on the situation, and she does not want the Lanterns poking around. The chanting swells to a full-page frenzy, and the issue pivots — horrifyingly — to its opening vision.

THE NIGHTMARE : WHAT GALAXY SAW

One of the most striking pages in the entire book is a wordless-ish, devastating full-page splash: the Witch Queen stands triumphant over a ruined battlefield. She is enormous and terrifying — wild teal hair streaming, golden crown blazing, purple skin crackling with lightning as she screams the Witch Queen chant into the sky. All around her, members of the Justice League and a pile of Green Lanterns lie beaten and unconscious. At her feet: Galaxy herself, collapsed and unmoving. And from somewhere in the wreckage, someone whispers two devastating words in speech bubbles: “Taylor… no…” and “Taylor, what did you do…?”

This is the prophetic dream vision that has been haunting Dreamer. That’s the shape of things to come — unless someone changes the future.

THE HOUSE OF SECRETS — RECRUITING THE DREAMER

Cut to Earth. The House of Secrets. A young woman named Taylor (civilian identity, no costume) wakes up in bed yelling from the vision, only to find Galaxy already standing over her — suited up, green hair wild, no-nonsense.

“Girl. I’m in COSTUME. Call me Galaxy.”

The person Taylor was calling? That’s not Taylor in bed. That’s Dreamer — Nia Nal, the prophetic superhero and one-time Supergirl supporting character, who has since become a complicated, conflicted figure in the DC Universe. She’s wanted by multiple governments, has a complicated relationship with the Justice League, and is currently hiding out at the House of Secrets with the sarcastic, leather-jacketed Black Alice (Lori), who greets the whole situation with an eye-roll and the corgi companion Argus (a Cyandii Protection and Surveillance Unit, thank you very much — not a dog). Galaxy crashes in — not to arrest anyone, but to ask Dreamer for help.

Galaxy makes her pitch: she’s been assigned by Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris) to a Justice League mission — a group of Green Lanterns has gone missing, and all signs point to Naltor. She wants Dreamer on the team, because Dreamer’s dream-walking and “dream energy” abilities make her uniquely suited to the threat. Dreamer’s response: flat refusal.

But Galaxy has done her homework. She pushes harder: the missing Lanterns may already be under the Witch Queen’s control, Naltor is Dreamer’s mother’s home planet, and the Justice League is running an amnesty program for reformed villains — Dreamer could come back in from the cold. Dreamer fires back: Earth is her home. The Lanterns did nothing to save Cyandii, why should she care about them? And as for Naltor — why go risk your life for people who would have left you for dead?

Galaxy lands a quiet, devastating reply: “You used to know why.” Then she flies off with Argus. The door closes. Dreamer stares at the ceiling.

INTO THE FIRE: THE NALTORIAN AMBUSH

The Justice League ship arrives above Naltor and is immediately swarmed by the Naltorian army — possessed citizens fighting with alien weapons, anticipating every move before it happens. Star Sapphire and Galaxy fly defense while Adam Strange pilots and Green Arrow mans the turret. The army is good — too good. They seem to know every evasive maneuver before Adam attempts it.

Green Arrow, grumbling about being “third choice” (Hal Jordan and Black Canary were both busy), is put to work in the turret with a bow that in space looks embarrassingly primitive. Then, he fires a single technically spectacular volley that destroys several enemy ships in rapid succession — BOOM BOOM BOOM — and pumps his fist. “ALL HAIL THE NEW KING OF SPACE!” he bellows. And then, immediately, the ship takes a catastrophic hit. They’re going down.

Right in this moment of crisis, Dreamer appears in the ship’s cockpit. She “dream-walked” through Green Arrow’s unconscious mind while he was firing — a remarkable entrance that shocks everyone and explains exactly why Galaxy wanted her there. “I dream-walked through Green Arrow’s unconscious mind,” she says. “I’m here to save your lives.” She guides the crew to a ruined temple in the eye of a sandstorm — a pocket free of dream energy, and therefore invisible to the Witch Queen’s future-sight.

CRASH-LANDING AND CONFRONTATION

The ship is crippled, the mission has gone sideways, and the team is stranded in the desert. Galaxy uses her gravity-manipulation powers to slow the ship’s fall, working alongside Star Sapphire to keep it from killing everyone. They make it — barely.

What follows is one of the best stretches of interpersonal writing in recent DC memory. Star Sapphire tears into Galaxy for inviting a “war criminal” onto a classified mission. Dreamer and Green Arrow have a quiet, loaded exchange — Oliver reveals he knew what was happening to Dreamer when she was caught in Amanda Waller’s schemes during the Absolute Power crisis, and he did nothing. He apologizes. Dreamer acknowledges it, but rejects the League’s amnesty offer anyway: “Jumping through hoops and learning to sit on command won’t mean I’m TRUSTED. Just CONTROLLED.”

Galaxy pulls Dreamer aside and reveals the full weight of what she saw in her vision: Dreamer, standing over the corpses of the missing Lanterns and the Justice League, eyes filled with rage. “I can’t lose you too,” Galaxy says.

THE WITCH QUEEN’S WEAPON: DREAM ENERGY AND DESPAIR

Adam Strange, barely holding it together, begins chanting — “I dream of the Witch Queen” — and then Star Sapphire (Carol) attacks Galaxy directly, screaming that the Witch Queen wants Galaxy dead above all others. Galaxy realizes the crisis: the Witch Queen’s influence has seeped into the dream-energy pathways of anyone with intense negative emotion and a power ring. The Guardians are missing, the Power Batteries are reformed — any ring-wielder is uniquely vulnerable.

Galaxy, using her Cyandii “Galaxy Vision” — the ability to perceive and manipulate energy — spots a dream-parasite creature latched onto Carol’s frontal lobe, feeding on her negativity and despair. She carefully suppresses Carol’s ring charge and blasts the nightmare creature off. Carol collapses, shaken: “It was like I had no control over my body. Just locked in a depressive spiral…”

The tactical revelation, delivered on pages 17-18, reframes the entire conflict: the Witch Queen doesn’t use magic. Her scepter is a remote control powered by borrowed dream energy from Naltor’s sleeping population. She harvests fear, anger, and despair like fuel. The more hopeless and enraged you feel, the more power she holds over you. Naltor — a world that was built on total reliance on its prophets, left suddenly alone and afraid when the High Seer died — is the perfect feeding ground. A planet-sized emotional wound, wide open.

Galaxy, looking up at the star that used to be Cyandii, says quietly: “It’s not too late for Naltor.” And Star Sapphire, shaking off the last of her possession, stands up and gives her battle speech: no secrets, no tricks — the Naltorian seers can foresee any plan, so the only way to beat them is raw, obvious force. Hit ’em hard, hit ’em fast, hit ’em obvious.

THE FOUND LANTERNS AND GALAXY’S RECKONING

Plan is put into motion — but Galaxy and Dreamer are still mid-argument about rage and the future, a confrontation that won’t fully resolve until the very last page. Galaxy has admitted her terror: the rage she saw in Dreamer’s future eyes was real, was prophesied, and is already building inside Dreamer with every step she takes on this mission. Dreamer lashes out, then goes quiet: “There are things bigger than my feelings.”

Then — they find the missing Lanterns. A whole swarm of them, green rings blazing, chanting the Witch Queen’s name and ready to destroy everything in their path. Galaxy tells the team to go on without her. She’ll hold the Lanterns off alone.

What follows is one of the most emotionally raw fight sequences of the book. Pages 23-24 show Volk — the leader of the corrupted Lanterns — deploying the Witch Queen’s most precise weapon: truth. He tells Galaxy everything she already knows and fears: the Guardians watched Cyandii fall and did nothing, because one Cyandii with energy powers was a strategic threat to a corps built on energy weapons. They calculated that Galaxy’s people were more trouble than they were worth, and they let them die. Her parents died because they were “strategically inconvenient.” And now she — the last one — can’t even avenge them. “You couldn’t even be their son,” Volk spits.

Galaxy screams. Adam Strange, who deployed the forbidden Chrono Grenade to buy them private time in a bubble of accelerated speed-force, holds her in a moment outside the battle and talks her through it. On page 25-26, in one of the best exchanges in the book: “Let’s say the Lanterns failed you — are you going to punish every member of the Corps for it?” “YES!” Adam, quietly: “Sometimes there isn’t a hero around when you need one. Sometimes the best you can do is keep what happened to you from happening to someone else.” And Galaxy — still furious, still raw — takes the Green Lantern rings off every single possessed Lantern using her energy manipulation and lays them gently on the ground. “Then let’s go fight that corruption at the SOURCE.”

THE WITCH QUEEN’S THRONE AND THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

Star Sapphire, Dreamer, and Green Arrow breach the Witch Queen’s palace on Naltor. The Witch Queen — Maal Sinestro, a descendant of Thaal Sinestro himself — has been raging at her Seers for failing to deliver Galaxy. She needed the last Cyandii’s power to break beyond Naltor. And now the Justice League is at her door.

Star Sapphire delivers the arrest declaration. The Witch Queen smiles: “I KNEW you were going to say that.” She claims the Seers’ clairvoyance gives her perfect foreknowledge. She blasts Star Sapphire across the room, deflects Green Arrow’s arrows, and seems to anticipate every single move. Until Dreamer steps forward.

Dreamer has been here before — she is the wielder of genuine dream energy, not stolen clairvoyance. She calls the Witch Queen’s bluff: stolen power doesn’t give you the ability to properly interpret prophetic dreams. The nightmares are disorienting. Are you sure it was us you foresaw losing, or did you just seal your own fate?

The plan comes together in pure superhero poetry. Dreamer positions herself in the Witch Queen’s path, trusting Green Arrow’s aim completely: “I TRUST YOU! TAKE THE SHOT!” Green Arrow fires. Dreamer channels everything into an enveloping blast of dream energy. The Witch Queen grabs the arrow — and Dreamer’s blue dream-energy explosion detonates the scepter. KRAAK. It shatters. Maal Sinestro, stripped of her stolen weapon, is powerless.

AFTERMATH — SEERS, MOTHERS, AND DIFFICULT HOMECOMINGS

Pages 31-33 are the denouement, and they are loaded. Galaxy and Adam Strange crash in through the wall (to be fair, Dreamer had just obliterated most of it). The possessed Lanterns, deringed and freed, are no longer a threat. Maal Sinestro is taken into custody by the newly liberated Lanterns, headed for Oa.

But the most important scene happens when the Seers of Naltor recognize Dreamer. She wears the armor that belonged to a former Seer — her mother. The Seers are stunned: they had long prophesied that the wielder of dreams would lead Naltor from its ruin, but they believed that figure to be the Witch Queen, not the woman standing before them. They were wrong. They have been, the Seers acknowledge gently, misinterpreted — especially without the High Seer to guide their visions.

Dreamer is having absolutely none of their reverence. She unloads: the Seers trained their entire lives to be protectors of this world, and when the crisis came, they did nothing but wait for someone else to solve it. They followed orders. They let the Witch Queen corrupt their planet by refusing to think for themselves. “GROW A SPINE and THINK FOR YOURSELVES!” she snaps. And then, firmly: “I am NO ONE’S savior.”

Back on the ship (page 32), Mr. Terrific warmly congratulates the team. Star Sapphire enthusiastically tries to bring Dreamer into the Justice League officially. Dreamer refuses. She was only there to change her vision. She’s going back to the House of Secrets. The argument between Galaxy and Dreamer, always simmering, finally boils over — Galaxy accuses Nia of clinging to childhood fantasies, of running away. Dreamer drops the bomb that Galaxy didn’t know: that Dreamer died — died saving Superman during the Absolute Power storyline — and came back to life, and somehow Galaxy never knew because Dreamer never picked up the phone.

“You… DIED?” Galaxy goes very still.

THE FINAL PAGE — AND THE CLIFFHANGER

Page 33, the last story page. Galaxy is still pushing, and Dreamer finally snaps with the ugly, painful truth underneath her refusals: “ALL RIGHT! YOU WIN! Yes! I’m a BAD FRIEND, I’m a BAD HERO, and I WAS better off dead because all I do is make everything WORSE!” Galaxy, finally past the point of nurturing: “I am SO TIRED of you using self-pity as ARMOR every chance you get.” The fight erupts — Galaxy storms off, Dreamer tells her to go have her great big superhero life without her. Galaxy says she will.

Two panels of just their faces, both clearly fighting back everything. A hitch. A stammer. And then — both of them flinch simultaneously. Wince. Grab their heads. “Hnn—” “Ngh—” Both Dreamer and Galaxy collapse, unconscious, as the entire team looks on in alarm.

Green Arrow says: “Uh… kids?”

And in the corner of the final panel, the text box reads:

Released in April 2026, this is Straub’s seventh book for adults, and it carries the same DNA as her best work: an enclosed setting, an ensemble of people at crossroads, and an almost reckless warmth toward every single one of them. This time the setting is the cruise ship American Fantasy, sailing out of Miami for four days with a fictional 1990s boy band called Boy Talk and the thousands of devotees — the Talkers — who never stopped loving them.

What the book is actually about

The central figure is Annie, newly divorced at fifty, whose sister broke her leg before the trip and whose presence on this cruise is essentially accidental. Annie doesn’t consider herself a true Talker. She has the wrong clothes, she finds the other passengers a little strange, and she is in the particular fog that descends on people when their life’s structure suddenly comes apart. She is, in other words, exactly the kind of person who needs to be on this ship.

Straub structures the novel around the ship’s daily schedule — timestamps and deck numbers bracket each scene — which turns out to be a quietly brilliant formal choice. The claustrophobia of being at sea, of having nowhere to escape, forces all the novel’s tensions to eventually arrive at the same place.

Alongside Annie, we follow Keith, a founding member of Boy Talk who is going through his own quiet unraveling; and Sarah, the sharp, perpetually underappreciated producer who keeps the whole operation from falling apart. The band, nicknamed Boy Talk, has sold millions of records, now performs for easy money, and is held together partly by nostalgia, partly by contracts, and partly by the kind of unspoken loyalty that forms between people who’ve been through something massive together.

What Straub gets brilliantly right

The greatest achievement here is the treatment of nostalgia itself. This is a novel that takes fandom seriously without romanticizing it — it shows the joy and the delusion, the genuine community and the uncomfortable power dynamics, all in the same breath. The Talkers are portrayed with real compassion. These are women who found something meaningful in a boy band when they were teenagers and who have held onto that feeling across decades of marriages, divorces, careers, and losses. Straub never once mocks them for it.

Keith, the band’s lead singer, emerges as the book’s most emotionally complete portrait. He is, as one reviewer put it, probably the most persuasive depiction of fame-as-exhaustion in recent literary fiction — a man who has spent thirty years giving something of himself to audiences without ever being able to name what it costs. When Annie actually connects with him, and has to grapple with whether that connection is real or merely a projection of her own longing, the novel reaches its most interesting territory.

Annie’s narration is sharp and self-aware and tinged with a dry, self-deprecating humor that anchors the whole book emotionally. The ship itself, as a setting, is brilliantly conceived — a liminal space where the usual rules of life are suspended, where the only thing that matters, for four days, is the music and the memory of who you were when it first found you.

Where it falters

No book is perfect, and American Fantasy has its soft spots. Sarah’s subplot, which involves a recent breakup and a mysterious figure named Jonathan who attaches himself to the band’s controlling frontman Shawn, is the one thread that never quite pays off. Jonathan arrives with implied menace and departs without the confrontation his setup seemed to demand. Sarah herself is sharp and entertaining in the moment, but her story never accumulates the emotional weight of Annie’s or Keith’s, leaving the novel slightly unbalanced in its final act.

The book can also feel, at times, more interested in observation than in dramatization. Straub is an extraordinary noticer, and her cultural commentary is precise and funny, but there are moments when the novel seems to sketch ideas rather than fully inhabit them. Some readers — particularly those outside the demographic that grew up with boy bands — may find the plot’s gentle pace more meandering than meditative. This is a book that moves like the ship it’s set on: steadily, unhurriedly, bobbing along on warm water.

The ending, too, is a touch too tidy. Life, as Straub herself seems to understand, rarely wraps up this cleanly. But it’s hard to be genuinely annoyed at a novelist who is this generous with her characters.

Emma Straub’s world and where this fits in it

Straub has spoken openly about the fact that this novel grew, in part, from her own experience going on a New Kids on the Block cruise after the death of her father, the novelist Peter Straub. She was looking, in her words, for something that injected pure joy back into her life. That personal origin is palpable in the book’s best moments — the sense that fandom, when taken seriously, is actually about looking for a version of yourself that still believes things can surprise you.

Readers who loved This Time Tomorrow, her quietly devastating tribute to her father that used time travel as its central metaphor, will recognize the same emotional preoccupations here: what we lose as we age, what we carry forward, and whether the past can be revisited without being destroyed. American Fantasy is a lighter book than This Time Tomorrow, but it is not a lesser one. It is doing something different — reaching for joy instead of grief — and it mostly succeeds.

Who should read this

If you ever loved a band — or a show, or a book series, or any cultural artifact — with the kind of full-body devotion that felt slightly embarrassing in retrospect, this novel will make you feel understood in ways that are genuinely moving. It is also a sharply observed novel about middle age and what it means to be fifty and realize that life can still startle you. And it is, on its surface, an extremely fun book to read: witty, warm, set on a boat full of screaming fans, and populated by characters whose inner lives are far more complicated than their circumstances might suggest.

Straub has said this book is about time and love and loss — and it is. But it’s also about what happens when you let yourself feel something again, even something you were embarrassed to admit still mattered. That’s a harder trick to pull off than it sounds, and she pulls it off.

The Arrival: Rain, Broth, and Brotherhood (Pages 3–5)

The story opens in the heart of Seoul, where the atmosphere is thick with rain and the glow of countless signs. We are immediately introduced to the central dynamic between the brothers. Castor, dressed in a sharp suit, is relishing the local street food, marveling at how much better everything tastes in the “motherland”. He jokingly suggests that the ajumas (middle-aged women) must be putting something illegal into the broth because it’s so addictive.

In contrast, Paul, wearing a more casual hoodie and glasses, is a ball of nerves. While Castor is soaking in the “Han” (a complex Korean emotion of grief/resentment/longing) pounding in his chest, Paul is focused on the reality of their situation. They are broke. Paul reminds Castor that they wouldn’t even be in Seoul if Castor hadn’t blown all their money previously. Now, they are down to their very last chips, and Paul is desperate for Castor not to “fuck this up”. Even as Paul tries to stress the importance of their upcoming “pregame interview,” Castor remains characteristically distracted, finding humor in the fact that local tissue packets have advertisements on them.

The Facade of Faith: Father Park and the “Church” (Pages 6–10)

As they make their way to the Thunder Cove Casino, the brothers run into a familiar face: a priest named Father Park whom they had sat next to on their flight to Korea. They encounter him outside what appears to be his “church,” the Hammer of Sephoris. The interaction is layered with irony. Paul, who seems more grounded but perhaps more susceptible to guilt, is polite and surprised by the “small world” coincidence. Castor, ever the skeptic and opportunist, is less impressed, even asking Paul if he remembered to pack condoms while Paul is trying to have a respectful moment with the priest.

The brothers’ disparate personalities are on full display here. Paul (whose full name is revealed to be Pollux, a nod to Greek mythology) is the “responsible” twin who feels the weight of their lifestyle. He expresses to Father Park that he’s been having trouble sleeping, troubled by the constant fighting with his brother. Paul admits he feels like Castor might be the death of him one day. Father Park offers a somber perspective, sharing that he lost his own brother in his twenties to a car accident, and that in his dreams, his brother remains a child. He urges Paul to value the fact that he can still talk to his brother in real life.

The Tournament: High Stakes and Mob Rumors (Pages 11–15)

The setting shifts to the interior of the Thunder Cove Casino for the 12th Annual Easter Week Poker Tournament. This isn’t a small-time game; the buy-in is 23 million won (roughly $20,000 USD), with a grand prize of 120 million won ($100,000 USD). The stakes are personal as well, as the players are using their own money rather than relying on sponsors.

The tournament commentators highlight Castor Wahng as one of the hottest rising stars in poker. A former MMA fighter from Los Angeles, Castor has been undefeated in his first five televised tournaments. However, the favorite to win is Daeshim Kang, a formidable local figure. As the game progresses, dark rumors circulate about Kang. It is whispered that he doesn’t just frequent the casino—he runs it. More disturbingly, he is rumored to lead a ruthless criminal syndicate known as “The Bloody Cocks,” which allegedly operates a secret cockfighting ring in the bowels of the casino. The commentators warn that $100,000 isn’t worth “getting your face rearranged over” by Kang’s mob.

The Hustle: Telepathy in the Dark (Pages 16–30)

The brothers’ strategy is a masterclass in technological and supernatural cheating. Paul sits at a bar elsewhere in the casino, watching the live broadcast of the tournament on a tablet or TV. Because the broadcast shows the players’ cards to the home audience, Paul can see exactly what everyone is holding. He then telepathically communicates this information to Castor at the table.

They play it smart, intentionally losing some hands to avoid suspicion. Castor goads his opponents, at one point making Daeshim Kang fish a discarded chip out of a “garbage clap can”. Tension reaches a breaking point during a massive hand between Castor and Kang. Castor holds pocket Queens, giving him a massive statistical advantage, but the situation turns dire when a sudden power outage hits the casino.

Paul loses his connection to the stream. He is blinded, unable to see the cards or the action. He panics, frantically searching for another bar with power, screaming telepathically at Castor to “just keep folding” or stall until he can find a working TV. But Castor, fueled by adrenaline and perhaps a touch of arrogance, refuses to wait. Despite having “already sunk so much into the pot,” he decides to go all-in blindly. Paul is distraught, begging his brother not to call, fearing they are about to lose everything they have left.

Victory and Volatility (Pages 31–35)

The power returns just in time for the reveal. Against all odds, Castor wins the hand with a full house on the river, beating Daeshim Kang’s flush. The brothers have won the $100,000 grand prize. While Castor celebrates with a “Gangnam Style” shout, Paul is furious. He confronts Castor, pointing out that they only won because they got lucky, not because of their system. He is terrified by Castor’s willingness to gamble their entire future on a whim when Paul wasn’t there to guide him.

Castor brushes off the concern, claiming that “luck is for people who aren’t telepathically connected”. Despite the tension, Castor shows a rare moment of sibling affection. He presents Paul with a gift: an engraved cigarette case featuring cranes. He explains that the cranes made him think of them as brothers. Paul, however, remains troubled. He suggests that they should “go straight” before their scams catch up with them, wondering if there is more to life than their constant grift. Castor is dismissive, asking if Paul would rather go back to washing dishes for $9 an hour or selling crack.

A Somber Nightcap: The Mystery Woman (Pages 36–42)

The issue concludes with the brothers parting ways for the night. While Paul goes for a walk to clear his head, Castor remains at a hotel bar. There, he meets a mysterious and cynical woman named Jiyun. Their conversation is dark and philosophical. They discuss a news report about a man found rotting in a dumpster, which leads them to contemplate their own deaths.

Jiyun expresses a bleak worldview, saying “life is just a big shit sandwich… with vomit on the side,” and wishing a comet would just wipe everything out.
